- Design and Development: Develop detailed designs and specifications for industrial machinery components and assemblies using CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or CATIA. This includes creating 3D models and manufacturing-ready 2D drawings with a focus on form, fit, and function.
- Sheet Metal and Part Design: Specialize in sheet metal design, ensuring designs are optimized for fabrication processes like laser cutting and bending. The role also involves general part design for various manufacturing methods, including machining, casting, and welding.
- Assembly Design & Collaboration: Design complex assemblies and sub-assemblies of machines and automation equipment. Coordinate with the production, assembly, and quality control teams to ensure design feasibility and to troubleshoot any issues that arise during the manufacturing and assembly process.
- Documentation and BOM Management: Generate and maintain detailed engineering documentation, including design specifications, engineering change requests (ECRs), and accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) for manufacturing and assembly teams.
- Prototyping and Testing: Participate in the prototyping and testing of new designs to validate performance, ensure compliance with quality standards, and implement design improvements.
- Technical Standards: Apply knowledge of engineering principles, material science, and industry standards, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and tolerance analysis, to all design work.
- Vendor Coordination: Collaborate with suppliers and vendors to select appropriate materials and manufacturing techniques for cost-effectiveness and quality.
- Education: A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field; a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering is also often considered.
- CAD Proficiency: Expertise in CAD software for 3D modeling and drafting, with common industry tools being SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and CATIA.
- Technical Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, including sheet metal fabrication, machining, and welding.
- Knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals and performing basic engineering calculations.
- Familiarity with creating and updating BOMs and using PDM/PLM systems.
