A Quality Engineer in a fabrication plant ensures that manufactured metal products meet structural, safety, and client specifications. They develop quality systems, audit welding/cutting processes, conduct non-destructive testing (NDT), and use root cause analysis to reduce defects and scrap rates. This role requires expertise in fabrication standards (e.g., ISO, ASME) and ensures compliance, safety, and continuous improvement in production.Key Responsibilities
  • QC System Development: Establish, implement, and maintain quality control systems, inspection protocols, and Procedures (WPS/PQR) for welding and fabrication.
  • In-Process Inspection: Perform routine audits, inspect incoming raw materials, and monitor fabrication operations to ensure compliance with quality standards.
  • Defect Analysis & Improvement: Identify non-conformities, analyze root causes (using tools like 5 Whys, Fishbone), and implement Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) to improve production quality.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain detailed reports of NDT (nondestructive testing), pressure tests, and inspection results.
  • Supplier & Client Liaising: Work with vendors regarding material quality and manage client feedback to ensure final product satisfaction.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related field.
  • Technical Knowledge: Understanding of metal fabrication techniques (welding, cutting, shearing) and NDT methods.
  • Certifications: Familiarity with industry standards (e.g., ISO 9001, ASME, AWS).
  • Analytical Skills: Proficiency in interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and using Statistical Process Control (SPC) tools.
  • Software Proficiency: Familiarity with quality tools (e.g., Minitab) and Microsoft Office.
