The Foundry Metallurgist's main responsibility is to establish, maintain and implement process controls surrounding metal processing to improve overall metal quality and cost. Additionally, this position oversees the Foundry Lab and its operations of process control for all testing, metallurgical and sand systems. Establish and monitor chemical and physical properties of all metals poured to meet customer specifications and governing standards Establish and monitor sand properties to produce castings with good appearance and free from defects Directly responsible for the Foundry Laboratory (equipment calibration, raw material usage, etc.) Responsible for improving quality relating to sand or metallurgical defects Supervise Foundry Lab and Melt Department in an efficient manner to ensure consistent production of quality metal and control of foundry sand systems, gating and risering, etc. Establish and audit pouring temperatures and practices to ensure good quality castings Responsible for material certifications (C's & P's) Responsible for material and equipment evaluations (innoculants, alloys, binders, additives, coatings, etc.) to improve quality or reduce costs Responsible for metallurgical questions or consulting with Engineers, and customers (Warranty Returns for example) Establish and audit processes such as heat treat cycles to produce castings with necessary properties. Instruct and train foremen and others in technical areas of foundry metals, sand, etc. Other Duties as requested or required Skills and Experience
