We do this by providing a trusted environment in which researchers can quickly, easily and transparently share their discoveries, data and research stories.About the roleThe Vice President Publishing, Mathematics, Physical & Applied Sciences (VP MPAS) is responsible for the publishing development of Springer Nature`s mathematics, physical sciences, chemistry, computing and applied sciences journal portfolio. This role is critical for driving the continuous development of the portfolio including the successful transition to Open Access while maintaining the values and integrity of the Springer brand. The VP MPAS is a key member of the Springer Journals Leadership team, working closely together with the other publishing VP’s as well as the Director of Publishing Strategy, the Director Business Performance & Operational Excellence and the Director Society & Partner Management and other units like Management Reporting, Planning & Analysis (MRPA), Operations, Sales & Marketing and Publishing Performance & Intelligence (PP&I). The VP MPAS plays an important role in development and communication of a forward-looking strategy for the MPAS portfolio as part of the Springer Journals portfolio which ensures that we support the global research community efficiently and effectively.Role Responsibilities1. Drive the publishing development of the mathematics, physical sciences, chemistry, computing and applied sciences journals in the Springer portfolio- Lead, motivate and inspire your group to produce journals and collections that deliver a best-in-class author experience and enjoy maximum engagement from the Editorial Board Members (EBMs) and Societies with whom we collaborate- Work closely with the other members of the leadership team of Springer portfolio and create a strategic vision and annual tactical plans for your group and actively drive the transformation of the portfolio to Open Access- Develop and drive forward strategic initiatives to support subject-level portfolio growth, in collaboration with the Director of Publishing Strategy- Develop the portfolio and agree with the all stakeholders the annual targets for journal submission, publication and transfer volumes as well as other KPI‘s and ensure that all KPIs are regularly monitored, reported and met, and that action is taken as needed- Take responsibility for the performance of your area and contribute to the monthly Business Review Meetings (BRM)- Work closely with the Director Business Performance & Operational Excellence and other units to improve the business performance of the portfolio, including turnaround times- Ensure that you and your team understand and engage with the individual research communities within the medical & life sciences areas that your journals serve2. Create a positive and energetic team environment in which your team feels engaged and understands what is expected and the value of their contribution to the business- Ensure that the strategic and tactical goals for your group are well communicated and cascaded into individual objectives- Engage with your direct reports and carry out annual performance reviews that focus both on targets/achievements and personal development- Be visible and engage actively with your group and all other stakeholders- Carefully monitor staff, travel and innovation costs to ensure that the group remains as profitable as possible while not compromising on quality or service- Role-model the leadership principles and ensure that these are incorporated into the day-to-day running of your group3. Contribute actively to the Springer Journals leadership team to develop the Springer portfolio- Contribute to the annual strategic planning process (MTP) for the Springer journals with special focus on the goals for the MPAS portfolio- Monitor relevant market developments and competitors to ensure that we can learn and/or respond as appropriate- Drive the growth and quality of the portfolio specifically in upcoming regions like India and be a champion for this specific area- Actively engage in and be part of the communication of the Springer portfolio in town hall meetings, team events etc.Experience, Skills & QualificationsEssential- Extensive publishing experience at a senior level, preferably within the academic field of mathematics, the physical or applied sciences, chemistry or computing- Excellent leadership, interpersonal and relationship skills with the ability to influence, inspire and motivate stakeholders and teams to achieve objectives- Business acumen with the ability to think strategically and develop tactical plans- Experience with Open Access publishing and understanding of its dynamics- Ability to drive positive change and deliver impact and a strong desire to improve organizations- Excellent communication and presentation skills- A teamplayer with a collaborative mindset and a structured way of working- Track record of working across geographies and with different nationalities and cultures- Fluent in English (written and oral)- Ability to travel internationally, as requiredDesirable- An understanding of the Springer Nature portfolio and Springer brand valuesYour application should include- A cover letter that conveys your interest and motivation for the role- A CV which should include a brief account of your accomplishments and of other relevant experience#LI-SM1||Responsibilities:
