The role includes overseeing safety audits, conducting training, managing safety incidents, and providing expert advice to both Operations & Maintenance (O&M) and project teams to maintain high safety performance levels across all sites.Responsibilities:Lead Thermal Fire and SafetySafety Culture Development and Engagement:Develop and promote a strong safety-oriented culture within the organization, ensuring safety is prioritized across all levels and operations of the business.Engage with each plant and project site to assess their safety activities and identify support requirements from the Head Office (HO).Conduct regular meetings with plant leadership and the Head of Departments (HODs) at HO to discuss safety incidents within the thermal power business.Serve as a subject matter expert and advisor to plants and project sites on safety-related matters, providing guidance on how to implement tasks effectively and ensuring adherence to deadlines.Assist plants and project sites in developing tailored safety checklists, considering local nuances, to improve compliance with safety standards.Incident Management and Communication:Gather, analyze, and report information on safety incidents, identifying gaps and areas for improvement. Ensure lessons from incidents are communicated across all thermal power plants.Coordinate communication on critical safety incidents, ensuring key learnings are effectively disseminated to management and plants and project sites.Participate in incident investigation teams for serious incidents, ensuring corrective actions and best practices are applied uniformly across all plants and project sites to prevent reoccurrence.Prepare and submit monthly MIS, annual, and quarterly safety reports as per management and legal requirements.Training and Development:Organize and ensure ongoing safety training for line management and other employees, ensuring they are conversant with safety standards, protocols, and procedures.Plan and organize additional monthly safety training programs beyond the standard schedule, incorporating new safety developments and requirements.Identify training needs for safety standards across all plants and project sites.Manage the Training & Implementation (T&I) calendar.Coordinate training sessions delivered by external sources as necessary.Facilitate safety training programs that focus on best practices and ensure that these practices are implemented across all plants and project sites, thereby enhancing safety performance.Ensure all contractors engaged at plants and project sites are properly trained in safety standards and protocols before they commence work, through pre-bid safety meetings and onboarding processes.Site Safety Audits and Inspections:Conduct monthly site visits to ensure all safety systems are effectively implemented and compliant with project and O&M safety protocols. Spend one week at each location to verify on-ground safety compliance.Perform safety audits at all plants and project sites, preparing closing reports for site management and HO every month to identify areas for improvement.Coordinate quarterly audits with the MASS team, review audit reports, and ensure follow-up actions are taken as necessary.Conduct periodic audits of O&M and project sites, ensuring all inspections are carried out effectively. Review open action points from previous audits and escalate issues if necessary.Safety Campaigns and Awareness Programs:Organize safety awareness campaigns at all sites, such as January Traffic Week and February Safety Week, using posters, trailers, teasers, and charters to promote safety awareness.Develop and implement annual safety campaigns across the thermal business to drive engagement with safety standards.Organize plant-to-plant safety scorecards based on performance data, recognizing the best-performing plants and sharing best practices.Coordinate the Safety Plant of the Year competition, held both mid-year and annually, to promote safety excellence across the thermal business.Conduct annual employee safety perception surveys to gauge employee engagement and identify areas for improvement. Use the feedback to develop safety strategies for the following year.Coordinate with the Business Development (BD) team during mergers and acquisitions (M&A) to identify safety expenses and highlight potential safety concerns.Governance and Budget Management:Ensuring smooth functioning of Safety Governance systems (Project Chetna) at all locations.Prepare and submit budgets related to safety management at both HO and plant level.Ensure the budget is validated at the beginning of the year and reviewed monthly to track expenditures.Manage the development and implementation of safety governance mechanisms at project sites, overseeing the safety systems for both the Business Unit (BU) and group safety teams.Ensure compliance with legal and other requirements related to safety standards, audits, and sustainability reports across all sites.Coordinate with site safety teams and project executives to achieve safety excellence, ensuring adherence to BU and group safety protocols and standards.Organize the annual Contractor Management Conclave, promoting the importance of contractor safety and ensuring compliance with safety protocols across all projects.Strategic Safety Management and Reporting:Develop and implement comprehensive safety management systems, including the digitization of systems such as Gensuite, to improve safety reporting and compliance.Prepare and update safety management systems regularly, incorporating new technologies and processes where applicable. Revise procedures, checklists, and guidelines as needed to enhance safety performance.Organize annual safety meetings to review safety strategies and ensure new safety systems are implemented to drive improvement.Participate in daily O&M review meetings, monthly site safety review meetings, operations review meetings, steering committee meetings, site safety committee meetings, project risk meetings, and contractor meetings to stay aligned with safety objectives.Ensure safety compliance reports, including annual safety reports for SEBI requirements, are prepared accurately and submitted on time.Submit data to the group safety team to develop a Business Unit (BU) safety scorecard and organize the Safety Plant of the Year competition based on this scorecard.Key Stakeholders - InternalTechnical TeamFinance TeamPlant O&M TeamProject TeamHR TeamGroup Safety TeamKey Stakeholders - ExternalTrainersThird party AuditorsContractorsQualifications:Educational Qualification:B.E./B.Tech degree preferably in Mechanical or Electrical engineering with Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Safety from RLIs/CLIs or any other government recognized institute.Work Experience (Range of years):Minimum 15-20 years of experience in Safety Management in a large industrial / manufacturing or infrastructure preferably in a power sector Corporate Safety experience at National or Regional level is strongly preferred.· Experience in developing, implementing and managing a Health and Safety Management System in Power Plants.· Strategic leadership experience and competence with a proven ability to develop and implement strategic plans for Power Plant Safety.· Sound people skills with the ability to establish and build working relationships effectively. · Proven experience in leading a team of health and safety practitioners at multiple locations at a national level.Preferred Industry:Background in cement, power, process industries, or chemical industries.
