The Turbine Operator is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of steam turbines and their auxiliary systems (lube oil, seal oil, condensers, cooling towers). The operator monitors performance, conducts routine inspections, performs minor maintenance, and manages startup/shutdown procedures based on steel production demands and power load requirements.Key Responsibilities1. Operational Control (Field or DCS)
  • Startup/Shutdown: Execute startup and shutdown of the steam turbine-generator (TG) unit, including synchronization with the grid or plant internal network.
  • Monitoring & Regulation: Monitor critical parameters (speed, temperature, pressure, vibration, load) through DCS or local gauges and make adjustments to maintain optimal turbine performance.
  • Load Management: Adjust turbine power output based on steam supply and electricity demands from the steel plant.
  • Auxiliary System Operation: Manage supporting systems, including lube oil systems, seal oil, gland sealing, vacuum systems, ejectors, and cooling water pumps.
2. Maintenance and Troubleshooting
  • Inspections: Conduct regular field rounds to inspect equipment, check for leaks, abnormal sounds, or unusual vibrations.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance tasks such as lubricating equipment, cleaning filters, and tightening pipe joints.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose and fix operational problems, acting on alarms to prevent major failures or trips.
3. Safety and Compliance
  • Safety Protocols: Adhere to strict safety procedures, including Permit to Work (PTW) systems and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) protocols.
  • Incident Response: Handle emergency shutdowns and act quickly during abnormal conditions.
  • Environmental Regulation: Ensure operations comply with environmental and safety standards (e.g., IBR regulations for steam piping).
4. Documentation and Coordination
  • Log Keeping: Maintain accurate, detailed records of operational parameters, shift reports, and maintenance activities.
  • Communication: Coordinate with boiler operators and the main control room to synchronize operations.
Key Requirements
  • Education: ITI (Fitter/Electrician) or Diploma in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience: 2 to 5 years in power plant operations (specifically with steam turbines).
  • Technical Skills: Strong understanding of turbine governing systems, turbine auxiliaries, and DCS/PLC systems (e.g., Siemens, Yokogawa, ABB, or Honeywell).
  • Attributes: Good analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills; ability to work in high-temperature and loud environments.
  • Work Schedule: Willingness to work in rotating shifts.
Key Differences in Role Type
  • Turbine Field Operator: Focuses on the physical "on-the-ground" inspection of equipment, manual valve operation, and local troubleshooting.
  • Turbine DCS Operator: Focuses on controlling the turbine from a control room via computer systems, analyzing trends, and managing complex automation.
