Based on current job postings in the Indian steel industry (particularly in Chhattisgarh), a Head of Department (HOD) for SID (Sponge Iron Division) / Power Plant in a steel manufacturing plant is a senior leadership role responsible for the end-to-end operation, maintenance, and strategic direction of the specific plant unit.Here is a detailed job description based on these roles:Position SummaryThe HOD for SID/Power Plant leads, directs, and manages the operations and maintenance (O&M) of the Sponge Iron Kilns or the Captive Power Plant (CPP) to ensure maximum production, high operational efficiency, equipment reliability, and compliance with safety and environmental standards.Key Responsibilities1. Operational Leadership & Production Management
  • Target Achievement: Responsible for achieving daily, monthly, and annual production targets of Sponge Iron (DRI) or power generation (MW).
  • Process Optimization: Monitor and optimize kiln operations, raw material input (iron ore, coal), temperature profiles, and discharge quality to ensure high-grade DRI production.
  • Power Plant Management: Manage boilers, turbine-generator (TG) sets, and auxiliary equipment for efficient power generation.
  • Monitoring & Control: Oversee DCS (Distributed Control System) operations and coordinate with production, maintenance, and quality departments to ensure smooth flow.
2. Maintenance & Asset Management
  • Preventive & Breakdown Maintenance: Direct planning and execution of preventive, predictive, and shutdown maintenance for heavy machinery (kilns, coolers, conveyors, crushers, turbines, boilers).
  • Asset Life Cycle: Ensure maximum uptime of equipment, reducing breakdowns to improve reliability.
  • Spares Management: Manage inventory of critical spares, consumables, and fast-moving items to minimize downtime.
3. Safety, Compliance & Environmental Standards (QHSE)
  • Safety Enforcement: Strictly enforce safety protocols, SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures), and industrial hygiene to achieve zero-accident targets.
  • Environmental Compliance: Ensure compliance with pollution control regulations (WHRB - Waste Heat Recovery Boiler compliance, ESP, emission controls).
  • Statutory Compliance: Ensure all regulatory, statutory, and safety compliance requirements are met, including factory acts.
4. Team Leadership & Administration
  • Manpower Management: Lead, train, and manage a team of shift in-charges, engineers, technicians, and operators.
  • Performance Management: Set KPIs, foster a high-performance culture, and manage manpower deployment.
5. Cost Control & Continuous Improvement
  • Budgetary Control: Prepare and manage departmental budgets, focusing on cost-saving initiatives (optimizing coal/power consumption).
  • Process Improvement: Implement best practices (Lean, Six Sigma, TPM) to reduce waste and improve efficiency.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Experience: Usually 12–25+ years of experience in a steel/sponge iron/power plant, with 5–10 years in a leadership role.
  • Education: BE/B.Tech in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (Metallurgy also preferred for SID).
  • Key Skills: Strong knowledge of Sponge Ironmaking (DRI), coal-based kilns, Boiler Operation Engineer (BOE) certification (for power plant), DCS operations, equipment maintenance, and team management.
Typical CTC (Cost to Company) Range
  • 20.00 LPA – 30.00 LPA (depending on experience and plant size).
  • Some roles offer 15–20+ years of experience in the 15–18 LPA range, while senior positions can be higher.
