A Lab HOD (Head of Department) for a Steel Melting Shop (SMS) in a steel manufacturing company is responsible for leading 24/7 laboratory operations, ensuring accurate testing of molten steel, raw materials, and slag, and managing chemical compliance for finished products. This senior role involves coordinating with production for real-time process control, calibrating advanced equipment like spectrometers, and maintaining quality standards.Key Responsibilities
  • Operational Leadership: Manage SMS lab operations, supervising lab staff, technicians, and chemists to provide 24/7 testing support for melting and casting processes.
  • Quality Control & Testing: Direct the chemical and physical testing of raw materials (scrap, ferroalloys, DRI), molten metal, slag, and finished products (billets/ingots).
  • Instrument Management: Oversee the calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of spectrometers, XRF machines, and physical testing instruments.
  • Process Improvement: Monitor heat-wise chemistry, manage ladle metallurgy reports, and implement improvements to lab testing efficiency and accuracy.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Generate Test Certificates (TCs), ensure compliance with BIS/ISO standards, and maintain meticulous test logs.
  • Safety Adherence: Enforce safety protocols (HSE) within the laboratory environment.
Required Qualifications and Skills
  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Metallurgy, or Materials Science.
  • Experience: 5-10+ years in a steel plant laboratory, with specific expertise in DRI/SMS processes.
  • Technical Skills: Deep knowledge of spectrometer analysis (Optical Emission Spectrometry), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), and wet chemistry analysis techniques.
  • Leadership: Strong team management skills, capable of supervising shift duties.
