A Desk Engineer for the Coal Handling Plant (CHP) or Ash Handling Plant (AHP) in a steel company or its captive power plant is responsible for controlling, monitoring, and optimizing the entire material handling or waste disposal process from a central control room using Distributed Control Systems (DCS) or PLC-based systems.Key Responsibilities & Job Description
  • DCS Operation & Control: Operating conveyors, crushers, stacker-reclaimers (CHP), or fly ash/bottom ash systems (AHP) via DCS to meet operational parameters and production targets.
  • Process Optimization: Ensuring continuous coal feeding to the boiler (Bunker Management) or efficient ash evacuation/disposal to prevent plant shutdowns.
  • Troubleshooting & Maintenance Support: Identifying abnormalities, analyzing operational problems, and coordinating with field staff for immediate breakdown maintenance.
  • Safety & Compliance: Issuing Permits to Work (PTW), implementing LoToTo (Lock Out, Tag Out, Try Out) for equipment isolation, and adhering to environmental norms (dust suppression, ash slurry disposal).
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintaining accurate logs (logbook), preparing daily Management Information System (MIS) reports on coal/ash handling activities.
  • Coordination: Working with boiler, turbine, maintenance, and material procurement departments.
Required Qualifications & Competencies
  • Educational Background: B.E./B.Tech or Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, or Instrumentation Engineering.
  • Experience: Typically 2–8 years in O&M (Operation & Maintenance) of CHP/AHP or thermal power plants (300 MW+ units preferred).
  • Skills: Proficiency in DCS/SCADA operation, SAP knowledge, and strong knowledge of material handling equipment (conveyors, feeders, crushers, pumps).
  • Working Conditions: Ability to work in shifts, manage emergencies, and guide field teams.
Differences in Focus
  • CHP Desk Engineer: Focuses on coal reception, crushing, bunker feeding, and coal quality management (demurrage reduction).
  • AHP Desk Engineer: Focuses on electrostatic precipitator (ESP) hoppers, vacuum systems, slurry pumps, and ash disposal in silos
