A Deputy Manager or Field Engineer in a steel company is a critical, hands-on role responsible for overseeing daily operational, maintenance, or construction activities on-site to ensure production efficiency, safety compliance, and quality standards are met. They function as a bridge between management directives and on-ground execution, often working in departments such as Blast Furnaces, Steel Melting Shops (SMS), or Rolling Mills.Key Responsibilities
  • Operational Management: Directing day-to-day operations in the plant (e.g., SMS, EAF, Rolling Mills) to achieve production targets, optimize process parameters, and minimize waste.
  • Maintenance & Reliability: Implementing preventive and predictive maintenance schedules for machinery like kilns, conveyors, gearboxes, and EOT cranes.
  • Site Supervision: Supervising technicians and contractors to ensure technical designs and project schedules are followed.
  • Troubleshooting: Identifying technical malfunctions and diagnosing equipment problems, providing prompt solutions to minimize downtime.
  • Safety & Compliance: Enforcing safety protocols (OHSAS/ISO), conducting regular safety audits, and Ensuring 5S implementation.
  • Reporting & Documentation: Preparing daily/monthly reports on production progress, equipment health, and project technical documentation.
  • Cost Control: Monitoring resource allocation, managing inventory of spares, and identifying opportunities to reduce operational costs.
Typical Qualifications & Skills
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Metallurgical, or Civil Engineering.
  • Experience: Generally, 4–10 years of experience in the steel, heavy manufacturing, or EPC industry.
  • Technical Skills: Knowledge of furnace operations, refractory maintenance, hydraulic systems, or steel structural fabrication.
  • Software Proficiency: Experience with SAP PM/PP modules, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office.
  • Soft Skills: Strong leadership, decision-making, and team management skills, with the ability to work under pressure.
Department-Specific Roles
  • Blast Furnace/Electrical: Responsible for the electrical maintenance of substations, motor control centers (MCC), and pump houses.
  • Steel Melting Shop (SMS): Focuses on EAF/Refining furnace processes to maintain metallurgical standards.
  • Infrastructure/Civil: Manages structural steel, foundations, and workshop fabrication
