An Assistant General Manager (AGM) Electrical for a Steel Melting Shop (SMS) in the steel manufacturing industry is a senior technical leadership role responsible for the maintenance, operational efficiency, and safety of all electrical systems within the SMS, including Induction Furnaces, Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF), Ladle Refining Furnaces (LRF), and Continuous Casting Machines (CCM).Key Responsibilities
  • Maintenance Strategy & Execution: Develop and implement preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance strategies for SMS electrical equipment to minimize downtime.
  • Operational Reliability: Ensure 100% availability of electrical power systems, EAF/Induction Furnace panels, and Crane electricals.
  • Breakdown Management: Act as the technical lead for troubleshooting major electrical breakdowns, ensuring swift resolution to maintain production continuity.
  • Technical Leadership: Supervise and mentor the electrical maintenance team, including shift engineers and technicians.
  • Project & Capital Management: Oversee electrical maintenance projects, installations, and commissioning of new equipment, managing costs and vendor performance.
  • Safety Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to electrical safety regulations (HSE) and statutory inspections to prevent accidents.
  • Energy & Cost Optimization: Monitor power consumption, identify opportunities to reduce operational costs, and manage spares inventory.
  • Coordination: Collaborate with production and mechanical departments to optimize furnace tap-to-tap time and machine efficiency.
Required Skills & Technical Knowledge
  • Equipment Experience: Deep knowledge of AC/DC drives, HT/LT motors, transformers, VFDs, PLC-based automation (SCADA/HMI), and high-current electrical systems.
  • SMS Specifics: Strong experience with Induction Furnaces, EAF/LRF, and Casting Machine maintenance.
  • Leadership: Strong team management and communication skills.
  • Tools & Systems: Familiarity with SAP (PM module) and maintenance planning software.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical & Electronics Engineering.
  • Experience: Typically 10–20 years in the steel industry, with at least 5+ years in a supervisory role (Manager/DGM) within an SMS or casting unit.
Commonly Required Competencies
  • Troubleshooting: Ability to diagnose and fix complex, high-power electrical issues under pressure.
  • Spare Parts Management: Proficient in maintaining inventory and sourcing critical spares to avoid long downtimes.
