This role focuses on designing, developing, and maintaining scalable microservices and platform services using Java and Spring Boot to support the Interface Platform and enable reliable healthcare data exchange. The position emphasizes building reusable integration capabilities that support message intake, transformation, routing, delivery, and operational visibility across internal and external systems. We are building a robust and scalable integration platform that enables bidirectional workflows between athenahealth and external systems for seamless data exchange.The Interface Platform team is responsible for the foundational platform capabilities that support how interfaces are built, executed, monitored, and maintained across athenahealth’s integration ecosystem. This includes services that enable the exchange of healthcare data through messages and other structured formats across a range of network-based workflows. The team focuses on creating scalable, secure, and maintainable platform components that improve interface consistency, reliability, and operational efficiency. Through this work, the team helps strengthen interoperability across the healthcare ecosystem and supports athenahealth’s broader platform strategy.Essential Job Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain scalable microservices and platform services using Java and Spring Boot in support of the Interface Platform.
  • Design and implement reusable integration capabilities that support message ingestion, transformation, routing, delivery, and tracking.
  • Build services that enable reliable bidirectional data exchange between athenahealth and external systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver secure, reliable, and maintainable interface platform solutions.
  • Participate in code reviews, testing, and continuous integration practices to maintain high software quality.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to microservices, interface workflows, and platform behavior.
  • Document system designs, APIs, service behavior, and development processes to support maintainability and knowledge sharing.
  • Support deployment, monitoring, and ongoing maintenance of microservices and interface platform components in a cloud-based environment.
  • Contribute to platform reliability by monitoring service health, identifying risks, and supporting improvements in observability and operational performance.
  • Leverage AI tools across engineering activities—including code analysis, coding assistance, troubleshooting, test creation, and technical documentation—while rigorously validating outputs for accuracy, security, and relevance. Additionally, exposure to the AIDLC SDD model of development is considered a valuable preference.
Additional Job Responsibilities
  • Assist in evaluating and adopting technologies that strengthen interface platform capabilities and engineering efficiency.
  • Contribute to team knowledge sharing, technical discussions, and mentoring activities.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives.
  • Support performance tuning and optimization of microservices and interface platform services.
  • Collaborate with security teams to align platform services with security and compliance best practices.
  • Help improve development workflows, automation processes, and deployment practices.
  • Engage in cross-team initiatives that improve platform scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Contribute to strengthening reusable platform capabilities rather than point-to-point integration solutions.
Expected Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4 to 6 years of professional experience in software development.
  • Proficiency in Java, Spring Boot, and microservices architecture.
  • Experience building scalable, distributed systems and backend platform services.
  • Experience working on integration platforms, service-based architectures, or message-driven systems.
  • Familiarity with software development lifecycle practices and Agile methodologies.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to write maintainable, scalable, and performant code for enterprise applications.
