Job Description:What You'll DoOur ideal Senior Systems Engineer is detail oriented, possesses strong written and verbal communication skills and has a track record of engineering and supporting solutions in a large scale enterprise environment. While focused on systems engineering, also ensuring the technology we are delivering via modern infrastructure as code methodologies on major cloud hosting platforms is meeting our customer needs and objectives. Additionally, the ability to interact with not only peers but also leadership and customers at a global scale is required. Our preferred candidate will have the knowledge and expertise to support these solutions for all of Avalara throughout our offices globally. Leveraging automation to build self-service tools for customers is a must.
Job Duties

Provide senior level engineering and administration of Microsoft Windows and Linux based server infrastructure
Design, engineer, and maintain solutions based on project requirements deploy using modern infrastructure as code (IAC) methods
Automate everything - using automation to solve problems
Act as a subject matter expert and establish standards for business critical systems
Discover opportunities and lead efforts to simplify solutions with the goal of delivering a world class experience for internal customers
Demonstrate a proven expertise in planning and defining requirements for complex projects
Evaluate new products/technologies to determine impact on existing system configurations and prepare/present information to decision makers
Manage relationships with integrators and consultants
Have a strong background in networking and cloud-based services
Accustomed to maintaining documentation libraries, capturing business processes, creating storyboards and training materials
Provide upper-level support for escalations and train/mentor colleagues
Design and implement disaster recovery solutions supporting business continuity of business critical platforms

What You'll Need to be SuccessfulBA/BS degree in Engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent practical systems engineering with a minimum 8-10 years of experience. You must also be comfortable with managing technology solutions for a large scale global environment. You have hands-on experience with developing infrastructure as code (IAC) solutions and deploying on cloud based hosting providers.

Experienced with API and JSON development
Have worked in an Agile environment within Jira
Strong understanding of network, telephony, DNS, and ITIL concepts and topology
High availability and disaster recovery
Terraform, powershell, Ansible, python
Git based version control and CI/CD
Available to travel periodically

They exhibit a proven experience in an end-user facing role with exceptional customer service support and an ability to maintain a professional and appropriate demeanor in all situations. They must be self-motivated and able to grasp technology and concepts quickly with the ability to work on-call rotation for break fix, upgrades and installations. You also must work well in a team environment and be willing to assist other team members when needed.
