This is a hybrid position requiring 8 days per month in one of the WRI offices in Washington DC, London, Netherlands, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia or Africa. About the Program: Global Forest Watch (GFW) is a cutting edge, interactive online forest monitoring and alert system designed to help increase global access to environmental information, to reduce deforestation, and to conserve forest landscapes. GFW Pro is an online management application designed specifically to support reducing deforestation, ecosystem conversion and associated greenhouse gas emissions in commodity supply chains. Building on the success of GFW, a complementary initiative called Land & Carbon Lab (LCL) is working to provide decision-makers with the essential geospatial monitoring information needed to address the increasing competition for the world's finite land resources. As part of these broader GFW and LCL initiatives, our team of GIS Analysts and researchers collaborates with partners to produce, compile and analyze geospatial data and turn it into meaningful insights for a variety of users, including commodity supply chain actors and stakeholders. To help inform priority insights our team of GIS Analysts liaises with WRI's cross-cutting Supply Chains team, which coordinates efforts across WRI's various programs and international offices to advance responsible supply chains. The Supply Chains team seeks to enable responsible production, trade, and monitoring of commodities to protect human rights, forests and other ecosystems, and reduce GHG emissions from land-use change. Job Highlight: Reporting to the Research Director for Land & Carbon Lab, you will contribute to research strategy, implementation, and communications for WRI's growing portfolio of work focused on responsible agricultural supply chains. You will coordinate work with several WRI teams and lead a team of research analysts to publish best practice methods and produce and distribute data relevant to monitoring corporate deforestation and conversion free commitments and facilitating corporate greenhouse gas inventory reporting for the land sector. You will be supported by WRI's Supply Chains, Land & Carbon Lab, Forest Data Partnership and GFW Pro teams. What will you do: Research Strategy (20%): Lead the development of WRI's research strategy for monitoring deforestation and conversion free (DCF) supply chains and associated greenhouse gas emissions from the land sector. Inform decisions around data and research investments, and new lines of research or analysis Keep the pulse on latest supply chain and deforestation/conversion monitoring related data, as well as data needs for best practice MRV for DCF supply chains, GFW Pro user demand, Forests Data Partnership data priorities, and other WRI team priorities as relevant. Attend relevant conferences and stakeholder meetings Contribute to fundraising efforts Research Oversight (50%): Develop and evaluate analysis methods and datasets for use in GFW Pro Oversee and contribute to major research projects related to deforestation and conversion free supply chains, including development of deforestation KPIs, deforestation risk methodologies, Scope 3 emissions reporting, and a conversion-free reporting framework, amongst others Ensure that methods and data developed and shared via GFW Pro, WRI reports, peer-reviewed research publications and other channels follow WRI's research standards of excellence such as rigor, objectivity, timeliness, and fit for audience Manage GIS/research staff working on projects relevant to the Supply Chains Hub and GFW Pro Coordination (20%): Coordinate with other researchers working across Land & Carbon Lab and Global Forest Watch to ensure cohesion of data and methods, stay abreast of new data developments, and provide input on supply chain user needs Liaise with expert and engagement staff involved in standards development for best practice MRV of DCF supply chains Ensure cohesion between the Supply Chains team research strategy and the information and methods coming out of the Forest Data Partnership Communications and Engagement (10%): Write technical documentation and blogs to describe WRI's research and data for supply chain monitoring Engage with corporate and other stakeholders and respond to questions about the data and research coming out of the Supply Chains Hub, including through GFW Pro Be an internal and external technical resource on agricultural supply chain issues across WRI's Supply Chains portfolio Represent WRI publicly at conferences, seminars and other for a, participating and leading WRI delegations to relevant domestic and international meetings What will you need: Education: You have completed a bachelor's degree in the related field Experience : You have minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience developing research strategy and research questions, designing methods and identifying key findings, including on a topic related to agriculture and land use change Knowledge of relevant sustainability metrics and reporting frameworks, such as the Accountability Framework Initiative and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. Experience applying geospatial datasets and methods to policy aligned definitions and metrics Knowledge of land sector greenhouse gas accounting methods, including methods for direct and statistical land use change and familiarity with methods and data for calculating emissions from agricultural land management Familiarity with geospatial data and associated analysis methods Experience with technical writing, including scientific journal publications Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate technical ideas to technical peers, project managers, and senior leadership teams Experience coordinating across multiple teams or stakeholders Experience working with and managing staff from a diverse set of contexts and cultures, ideally in both developed and developing countries Practical or policy experience in the agriculture sector (e.g., working with stakeholders on the ground, supporting policy initiatives) Ability to efficiently synthesize information and make recommendations on how to proceed Languages: Verbal and written English proficiency Requirements: Existing work authorization is required where this position. WRI is unable to authorize visa work authorization Potential Salary: Salary range is: US: 96,000 and 110,000 USD UK: 53,000 to 67,000 GBP Europe: 67,000 to 84,000 GBP Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors.
